February 17th, 2010
How would your grandchildren see the world? The earth’s resources are rapidly getting depleted. With billions of people competing for dwindling resources, the future is quite bleak. You could still try to delay total loss by conserving energy in your own home. If everybody, in residential and commercial establishments alike, start saving energy, there may be some hope.
Saving energy at home with efficient use of home appliances
When you are home, you want to be able to relax and forget the rigors of a long day at work or school. You want to turn on either the heater or the air conditioner, depending on the air temperature at your place. You may do so but you have to make sure that your doors and windows are closed. If your appliance has to heat or cool air coming from outside or in a wide open space, then it will be using a lot of energy. Hopefully, your heater or air conditioner is the perfect size for your room. Use energy-efficient appliances. Those with Energy Star ratings help conserve energy. When washing clothes using a machine, make sure that you only use intense cycles and hot water for soiled clothes. Turn off appliances that are not in use. In fact, plug them out of the utility socket to avoid wasting more energy.
How to make your home eco-friendly
There are countless ways of making your home more eco-friendly. If you were not living green before, you may have to take it slow. It can get really expensive to change the features of your home. Water your house and garden plants only when really needed. There are plants that need only a little watering. If you live in a nice, suburban neighborhood, you can even dry your clothes outside instead of using the dryer. Separate your biodegradable from your non-biodegradable waste. Ask around for the nearest recycling center, if possible. Use public transportation for long distances and go on foot or by bicycle for short distances.
There are many simple ways in which you can contribute to the conservation of energy. Do not think that your eco-friendliness is too late. Just start conserving and encourage others to do the same.
